MGA World Walk - Stokes Bay

Approximately thirty people from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight attended the inaugural meeting of  the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Branch of the Myasthenia Gravis Association in May 1989; some of those people are still very active in branch affairs today.

A representative from the Isle of Wight attended most meetings on the mainland. Every year the branch arranged a summer outing to the Island for a lunch at one of the Hotels; this event was always the highlight of the year. In the mid-1990s the Isle of Wight members formed their own branch, so we were no longer called the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Branch, but we now have members from West Sussex  - some from as far away as Chichester and Bognor Regis.

There have been many changes in the Committee, but some of the past members still support the branch. When Barbara Openshaw was Secretary, the branch raised over £8,000 in one year, the most money raised by any branch in the Association in 1998/9, and won the MGA shield for that year. We are proud to have the name of Hampshire Branch on that shield!

In August 1996 the branch published its first newsletter, to tell members and supporters about the activities of the branch. Recent newsletters can be found on this website. We also try to use email to inform as many people as we can about events organised by the branch.

Our  Regional Organiser, Steve Saunders, helps with branch affairs, and enables the branch to have a close link with the management of the Association.

Garden Party

The Committee is working hard to encourage regional groups in Hampshire, so that myasthenics will be able to meet others near their homes.

Because the Hampshire Branch covers a wide area, we try to hold our events and meetings around the County, so that as many members as possible can come to an event at sometime during the year. We are a friendly group and you could be sure of getting a warm welcome!
